Ancestry.com DNA testing has opened up a lot of doors on family history/ties. It has also opened some very confusing puzzles. Below is a huge DNA puzzle on my Native side.

I have a Shared DNA Connection as follows:
H.B.
(managed by Joseph G. Parrie II)
H.B. is for Harold Bever. His immediate info is as follows:

Name:
   Harold Bever
Birth Date:
   14 Apr 1927
Gender:
   Male
Mother’s Name (Maiden):
   Lalla Joaquin
Father’s Name:
Hilbert Almon Bever (white, so won’t be used in any of this)
Birth Location:
   Darwin, Inyo County, CA

Our connection stands as thus:

Predicted relationship:
   Distant Cousins

Now, that chart is way out there, as shown here for a 5th cousin level (I filled in his info and my info to show how this is going to be an issue AND adjusted, given his age, to put him across from my dad. He is in-between my dad and grandmother, so he could conceivably be put higher, across from Julia) –

His Grandfather side:

His Grandmother side:

That is as far up as either of our known ancestors go, as in there is no information to be had above that.

As seen in the documentation for my immediate family, everyone is from Bishop or northward into Mono County. Shared DNA has confirmed that my Grandmother and her sisters all shared the same mother (Annie Johns Jefferson) and father (John Lawrence). Their father’s (John Lawrence) DNA traces have also been confirmed through his sisters (Susan Lawrence/Leonard) family as well as his dad’s (James Lawrence) family, so his (John Lawrence) history is locked in/confirmed. Their mother’s (Annie Johns Jefferson) DNA, however, has NOT been confirmed as linked to her father (Long Valley John) or mother (Maggie Johns). She (Annie) has a brother, Allie Johns, who had children, one of which is Maude Johns Shaw. So far, I have NOT had a Shared DNA hit from anyone on that side (Allie’s descendants) of the family.

I have another Shared DNA mystery person that I’ll be writing about on another page, as their situation is nearly identical to this one. There is one MAJOR difference though – As I said, my known ancestors are Bishop/northward into Mono County, right? The Shared DNA connection here, with Harold Bever, has a twist – All of his ancestors are SOUTHWARD, ie from Saline Valley to Death Valley! Some might say that Charlie Sam is related to Captain Sam, etc. Nope. He’s not. And I’m not related to Captain Sam either, except by marriage (as far as I know at this point… as said earlier, there is another Shared DNA puzzle. Maggie Johns married Captain Sam after Long Valley John passed away).

The following is information taken from the 1928 Applications (completed after that year, actually) for Harold’s ancestors. These are from the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe here in Inyo County, based in Bishop (un-related to the Bishop Paiute Tribe). Click their name for the Application link.

Take notice of those birth locations. Saline Valley and Manzanar are not only south of Bishop, but Big Pine and Independence as well. If you looked at the apps, no doubt you saw a mention or two of Darwin as well. That’s closer to Lone Pine, even father south. If interested, you can see more of those applications here – Link.

So as you’ve seen, there appears to be absolutely no connection between this family and mine, so *where* does that Shared DNA come from??? I suppose, by weird coincidence, that it could be up the Bever line meeting a different ancestor somewhere, with the end result happening with two sides of my family within shouting distance of each other…
